ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕಡಬ ತಾಲೂಕು ಕೌಕ್ರಾಡಿ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ದೋಂತಿಲವೆಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 900 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಹಿನ್ನಲೆಯುಳ್ಳ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ದೇವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವಿದೆ. ಈ ಪುರಾತನ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವು ಮಂಗಳೂರು-ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ 75ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುವ ನೆಲ್ಯಾಡಿ ಎಂಬ ಪೇಟೆಯಿಂದ ಬಲ್ಯ ಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 2 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಜೈನ ರಾಜರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಧ್ವ ಮತದ ಪ್ರಚಾರಕರಾದಂತಹ ಓರ್ವ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಆಚಾರ್ಯರ ಸಂಕಲ್ಪದಿಂದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪನೆಗೊಂಡು ಆರಾಧಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಂತಹ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಷ್ಣುಮೂರ್ತಿ ದೇವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದರು ಎಂಬುವುದು ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಕಾರಣಾಂತರಗಳಿಂದ ವಿಷ್ಣುಮೂರ್ತಿದೇವರ ಸ್ಥಾನಪಲ್ಲಟವಾದ ನಂತರ ನಾಗ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯದ ಪ್ರಾಬಲ್ಯದಿಂದ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಾಗಿ ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡು ಭಕ್ತರ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತು ಆರಾಧಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಾ ಬಂದಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ದೇವಳವು ಜೀರ್ಣಾವಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ದೇವಳದ ಅಡಳಿತ ಮಂಡಳಿಯು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಯಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞರಾದ ಉಡುಪಿಯ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ ಶ್ರೀ ಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣ ಜೋಯಿಸರನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ, ದೇವರ ಸನ್ನಿಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಊರಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖರ ಸಮ್ಮುಖದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಾಚಿಂತನೆ ನಡೆಸಿದಾಗ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ದೇವರ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಷ್ಣುಮೂರ್ತಿ ದೇವರ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯವೂ ಸಹ ಇರುವುದು ಕಂಡು ಬಂದಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಅದರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾವಿಷ್ಣುಮೂರ್ತಿ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ದೇವತೆಯಾದಂತಹ ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸಳಿಗಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ನೂತನ ಕಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಸದಾಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬರಲಾಗಿದೆ.
ಶ್ರೀ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 15 ಸಾಲುಗಳಿರುವ ಶಾಸನವೊಂದು ದೊರೆತಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಶಿಲಾ ಶಾಸನವು ಕನ್ನಡ ಲಿಪಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು 30 ಇಂಚು ಎತ್ತರ ಹಾಗೂ 16 ಇಂಚು ಅಗಲವಿದೆ “ಶಾಸನ ಶೋಧನ-ಅಧ್ಯಯನ-ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣಾ” ಯೋಜನೆಯೆಂಬ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಅಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ನಡೆಸಿದಾಗ ಈ ಶಾಸನವು ಸುಮಾರು 800 ವರ್ಷ ಹಳೆಯದಾಗಿದ್ದು ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಜೈನರಾಜರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹಾಯಾಗವನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿದ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಕುಕ್ಕೆ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೂ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿರಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಇತಿಹಾಸಗಾರರು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಅಧ್ಯಯನಗಳು ಶಾಸನದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆ .
ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ದೇವತೆಯಾದ ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಿಯ ಮೂಲವು ದೇವಳದಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು 5 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಎಣ್ಮಡ್ಕ ಎಂಬ ದಟ್ಟ ಅಡವಿಯ ನಡುವೆ ಇದ್ದು ಸನ್ಯಾಸಿಯೊರ್ವರು ಈ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸಿರುವುದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಾ ಚಿಂತನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡು ಬಂದಿದ್ದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಜಲ ಸಂಕೇತವು ತೀರ್ಥ ಸ್ವರೂಪವಾಗಿದೆ. ಎಣ್ಮಡ್ಕ ಕ್ಕೂ ಶ್ರೀ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೂ ಅವಿನಾಭಾವ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿದ್ದು ವಾರ್ಷಿಕ ಕಿರು ಷಷ್ಠಿಯ ದಿನದಂದು ದೇವಳದಿಂದ ಪಂಚ ವಾದ್ಯಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆ ಮೂಲಕ ತೆರಳಿ ಪೂಜಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ತೀರ್ಥವನ್ನು ತರುವುದು ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ರೂಢಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ.
ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಸುಮಾರು 100 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಜಾನುವಾರುಗಳು ಸಾಂಕ್ರಾಮಿಕ ರೋಗಕ್ಕೆ ತುತ್ತಾಗಿ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಗ್ರಾಮಸ್ಥರು ದೇವರ ಬಳಿ ಬಂದು ರೋಗ ಪರಿಹಾರವಾದರೆ ರಂಗ ಪೂಜೆ ಮಾಡಿಸುವುದಾಗಿ ಹರಕೆ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡ ನಂತರ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗೆ ಪರಿಹಾರ ದೊರಕಿತ್ತು. ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಕೂಡ ವಾರ್ಷಿಕವಾಗಿ ರಂಗ ಪೂಜೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷವೂ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾ ಬಂದಿದೆ.
ಚಂಪಾ ಷಷ್ಠಿಯ ದಿನದಂದು ಭಕ್ತರು ತಮ್ಮ ಇಷ್ಟಾರ್ಥ ಸಿದ್ದಿಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತವನ್ನು ಆಚರಣೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನದ ಪೂಜಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿ, ದೇವರ ಪ್ರಸಾದವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕಾರ ಮಾಡುವ ಪದ್ಧತಿ ಜಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
