In the village of Kowkradi, located in Kadaba Taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, there exists a temple of Lord Subrahmanya with a historical background of around 900 years. This ancient and sacred place is situated about 2 kilometers off the Nelyadi town on National Highway 75 (Mangalore–Bangalore route), along the Balya road.It is believed that during the reign of the Jain kings, a great Acharya belonging to the Madhva tradition consecrated and worshipped Lord Vishnumurthy here. However, over time, due to historical circumstances and the increasing divine presence of serpent (Naga) worship, the place transformed into a shrine dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya. Since then, it has remained a sacred center of devotion and continues to be revered by devotees.
The present temple is in a dilapidated condition. Therefore, the temple administration invited the renowned astrologer Vidwan Sri Gopalakrishna from Udupi. In the divine presence of the deity and in front of the village elders, a prasna chintane (astrological consultation) was conducted. It was revealed that, along with the presence of Lord Subrahmanya, the divine presence of Lord Vishnumurthy also exists at this place.
Accordingly, it has been decided to construct new sanctum sanctorums (garbhagudi) separately for Lord Mahavishnumurthy and Lord Subrahmanya, as well as new shrines for the presiding deities of the temple — Goddess Chamundeshwari and Hosaligamma.
At this sacred site, an inscription consisting of about 15 lines has been discovered. The stone inscription, written in the Kannada script, measures 30 inches in height and 16 inches in width.
Under the program titled “Inscription Research, Study, and Preservation Project,” a study was conducted, revealing that the inscription is approximately 800 years old. It contains references to a Mahayaga (great sacrificial ritual) conducted during the reign of the Jain kings in this region. Historians have also suggested that there may have been a connection between this site and the Kukke Subrahmanya temple. Further research on the inscription is currently ongoing.
The origin of the presiding deity, Goddess Chamundeshwari, is located about 5 kilometers away from the main temple, in the midst of a dense forest area called Enmadka. During the prasna chintane (astrological consultation), it was revealed that a saint had once worshipped this goddess there. The water source present at that site is considered sacred, regarded as a tirtha (holy water).
There exists an inseparable connection between Enmadka and this sacred temple. As part of a long-standing tradition, on the day of the annual Shashti festival(Kiru Shashti) , a ceremonial procession accompanied by pancha vadyas (five traditional instruments) proceeds from the temple to Enmadka, where special rituals and worship are performed. The sacred water (tirtha) is then brought back from there to the temple.
According to the temple’s history, about 100 years ago, when the village cattle were afflicted by a contagious disease and began dying, the villagers prayed to the deity, vowing to perform a Ranga Pooja if the disease was cured. After making this vow, the problem was resolved. Since then, the annual Ranga Pooja ceremony has continued to be observed every year.
On the day of Champa Shashti, devotees perform special rituals to fulfill their wishes, take part in the noon worship program, and receive the deity’s prasada (blessed offering) — a tradition that continues to this day.
In this sacred endeavor of temple renovation and restoration, undertaken with the noble aim of promoting social welfare, the temple administration earnestly appeals to all devotees and well-wishers to join hands and contribute with their body, mind, and wealth (service, devotion, and donations).
